Quick Answer
What Is Sitework and Excavation Estimating?
Sitework estimating calculates the cost to prepare and develop a site. That includes clearing, grubbing and stripping topsoil, excavation and embankment (cut and fill), removing unsuitable soils, importing fill, compaction, dewatering, erosion control, paving, curbs, sidewalks, stormwater systems and water, sewer and utility lines.
Earthwork is calculated by comparing existing and proposed grades. On many Florida sites, fill import, muck removal and dewatering are major cost drivers.
| CSI Divisions | 31 Earthwork, 32 Exterior Improvements, 33 Utilities |
|---|---|
| Earthwork | Clearing, stripping, cut/fill, muck removal, fill import, compaction, dewatering |
| Paving | Base, asphalt, concrete paving, curbs, sidewalks, striping |
| Utilities | Storm, water, sanitary sewer, fire lines, structures, lift stations |
| Sources | Civil drawings, topographic surveys, geotechnical reports |
| Clients | Site contractors, developers, GCs, municipalities |
Site Development Estimates Built from the Civil Drawings
Sitework can make or break a project budget, especially in Florida, where flat terrain, high groundwater and organic soils often require large amounts of fill, muck removal and dewatering. Our sitework estimators calculate earthwork volumes by comparing existing and proposed surfaces. We apply shrink and swell factors and use the geotechnical report to identify unsuitable material.
Paving sections are measured by area and layer, curbs and sidewalks by linear and square foot, and storm, water and sewer systems by pipe size, material and depth, with structures and fittings.
We include erosion and sediment control, NPDES compliance, testing, surveying and layout, and utility connection fees where known. For industrial and commercial sites, we price truck courts, retention ponds and off-site improvements.
Site contractors use our estimates to bid more work. Developers use them in early feasibility budgets.
