Quick Answer

What Is Demolition Estimating?

Demolition estimating calculates the cost to remove existing construction, whether selectively for a renovation or entirely for a new project. The estimator measures the materials to be removed, converts them to volume and weight for hauling and disposal, and prices labor and equipment. It also adds protection of remaining work, shoring, utility disconnects, dust and noise control, and coordination with any hazardous-material abatement.

Demolition estimates are essential for renovations, tenant improvements, storm rebuilds and site redevelopment.

Demolition Estimates Measured to the Ton

Demolition costs depend on what is being removed, how it is removed and where it goes. Our estimators measure every item on the demolition plans, including walls, ceilings, flooring, MEP systems, roofing and structure. We convert quantities into volume and weight for hauling, and price labor and equipment by method.

Disposal is priced by material type and tonnage, with landfill and recycling fees. Salvage and recycling credits are included where appropriate.

For selective demolition in occupied buildings, we include protection, dust control, after-hours work and phasing. For structural demolition, we include shoring, engineering surveys and utility disconnects. Hazardous material abatement is coordinated as a separate specialist scope.

Demolition estimates are often paired with renovation and storm rebuild estimates.
