Quick Answer

What Is HVAC Estimating?

HVAC estimating calculates the cost of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. The estimator prices equipment from the mechanical schedules, such as rooftop units, split systems, VRF, air handlers, chillers and fans. Ductwork is measured by weight or area, and fittings, insulation, air devices, refrigerant and condensate piping, controls, and testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB) are added.

In Florida, cooling and dehumidification dominate HVAC design, and rooftop equipment must be anchored for wind loads. See also MEP Estimating Services.

HVAC Estimates Built from the Schedules Up

HVAC bids start with equipment, and equipment prices depend on exact tonnage, efficiency, options and accessories. Our HVAC estimators price every unit on the mechanical schedules with its curbs, supports, disconnects and connections. Ductwork is measured run by run from the drawings, converted to weight or area by gauge, with fittings, access doors and insulation.

Air devices, dampers, refrigerant and condensate piping, exhaust systems and controls are counted and priced separately. Labor is applied by item and size, adjusted for building height and access.

Florida-specific costs include dedicated outdoor air and dehumidification systems, equipment wind tie-downs, and corrosion-resistant coils near the coast. Energy-code equipment efficiencies also matter. We price them from the specifications instead of generic allowances.

HVAC contractors use our takeoffs to bid more projects. GCs use them to check mechanical bids and level subcontractor proposals.

Florida Expertise

Florida Factors That Change HVAC estimating Costs

Florida’s codes, climate and market conditions add costs that generic national estimating data routinely misses.

Dehumidification

Florida’s humidity often requires DOAS units, ERVs or dedicated dehumidifiers beyond standard cooling equipment.

Wind Tie-Downs

Rooftop equipment must be anchored for design wind loads, with engineered curbs and straps.

Coastal Corrosion

Units near the coast may need coated coils and corrosion-resistant components.
